This Year In Movies - Hop, Insidious, and Source Code open in wide release this weekend. The Easter-theme cgi-live-action hybrid with Russell Brand voicing the Easter Bunny is the front runner. Rango is the most direct competition to Hop, and while Rango grossed a strong $9.8 million on its way to passing $100 million last weekend, Hop is positioned to rack up ticket sales until Rio arrives in mid-April. Hop looks to gross in the low-twenty million range in its debut. For older audiences, there is the time-travel thriller Source Code, in which Jake Gyllenhaal attempts to save Michelle Monaghan from a terrorist attack by traveling back into time before the explosion. The director, Duncan Jones, looks to have a soft spot for interesting sci-fi concepts. His last film, Moon, was a sci-fi mystery with essentially one actor. It won critics over (90% on Rotten Tomatoes), but couldn't take off at the box office, grossing around $5 million total. Source Code should fare better at theaters and gross in the $15 million range. Finally, from the director of Saw, James Wan, there's the horror movie Insidious. As the tagline aptly tells, it's not the house that's haunted, it's the kid. The new studio FilmDistrict hopes that's appealing enough to lure moviegoers, but tracking is in the high-single digits.

Last weekend, Diary of a Wimpy Kid trumped Sucker Punch. The Wimpy Kid sequel came in with $23.8 million, which was around the same amount of the original. It's no surprise then that the third movie is already in development. There are five books and given the relatively low budgets, don't be surprised to see Wimpy Kid 5 hitting theaters in Spring 2014. Sucker Punch disappointed with $19.1 million. Despite the visually stunning trailers, the marketing campaign apparently wasn't effective reaching beyond Zack Snyder's core fanbase. It will be difficult for Snyder to recapture the excitement and success of 300, but his next chance will probably be Superman in December 2012.... Read More
