This Year In Movies - Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, Fast Five, Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, Prom open in wide release this weekend. Although the summer Hollywood blockbusters typically arrive next month, the fifth Fast and Furious will probably deliver results that are typically reserved for May or July. Justin Lin, the director of the previous three movies of the Fast franchise, brings back the original cast and adds in The Rock as the antagonist. Deadline reports that Universal is downplaying Fast Five's box office potential, despite excellent early ticket sales globally. They set the bar at $50 to $60 million. However, just two years ago, Fast and Furious topped $70 million its opening weekend. A similar start or better seems more likely this weekend. Disney's Prom looks to open with $10 million and the long delayed Hoodwinked Too! will probably be stuck in the single digits. Dylan Dog, based on the popular comic book, arrives at around 1,000 theaters, around one-third the usual wide release. While the comic may have a cult following, the box office receipts will probably be in the low single digits.

Last weekend, Rio kept its number one spot with $26 million edging out Madea's Big Happy Family with $25 million. Water for Elephants came in third place with close to $17 million. Hop crossed the $100 million mark by adding another $12 million. As expected, Scream 4 had the worst drop off, falling over 60% to $7 million. The annual DisneyNature release, African Cats, came in 6th place with $6 million.... Read More
