Movies Released April 8, 2011

This Year in Movies - Arthur, Hanna, Soul Surfer, and Your Highness open in wide release this weekend. The remake of the 1981 comedy that featured Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli appears to have a small edge over the other new movies. The 2011 version of Arthur stars Russell Brand as the drunken playboy. With a PG-13 rating, Arthur gains a slight edge over its R-rated competition of Your Highness and aims for a box office take of around $15 million. However, at that level, it'll only be good enough for second place after Hop. With Natalie Portman, James Franco and Danny McBride, Your Highness should come in around the same range as Arthur. Further back, Hanna's Saoirse Ronan will fight it out with Soul Surfer's AnnaSophia Robb in the $10 million range.

The box office champ will remain, Hop, which will reign over the box office for a second weekend with ticket sales in the upper $20 million range. Last weekend, Hop grossed $37.5 million, greatly exceeding expectations and, at least in North America, it will have another weekend free of kid-friendly competition. Source Code met expectations with a weekend total of $14.8 million. In third place, Insidious did well with $13.3 million, far beyond its reported $1 million production costs.... Read More
