Movies Released June 24, 2011

This Year in Movies - Bad Teacher, and Cars 2 open in wide release this weekend. Since Toy Story debuted in 1995, Pixar has seen 11 consecutive #1 opens. This upcoming weekend will make it a dozen. The first Cars opened in 2006 with $60 million and, last summer, Toy Story 3 debuted with $110 million, far eclipsing any previous Pixar film. Cars 2, with Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy, looks to outperform Cars but fall short of Toy Story 3's box office. The second highest Pixar open was The Incredibles with $70 million. While that was in 2004, with cheaper non-3D ticket prices, topping $70 million would be a strong sign. Traders on the Hollywood Stock Exchange are expecting even more with predictions in the high $70 million range. With a decent shot of a second place finish, Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel and Justin Timberlake try to pass $20 million in the R-rated comedy Bad Teacher.

Last weekend, Green Lantern started with a strong $21 million Friday, but dropped over 20% on Saturday and finished the weekend with $53 million. It was at the low end of expectations. The big Saturday drop was seen by some as a sign of bad word-of-mouth, but while reviews were poor, the Saturday drop was more likely due to sizeable Friday midnight box office and typical summer weekend frontloading. Green Lantern should see a drop of at least 60% this upcoming weekend. In second place, Super 8 with $21 million and in third place, Mr. Poppers's Penguins with a slightly disappointing $18 million.... Read More
