Movies Released on March 18, 2011

This Year In Movies - Limitless, Paul, and The Lincoln Lawyer open in wide release this weekend. It's unlikely any of these new releases will open number one at the box office. Given the weak tracking and relatively strong movies already in theaters, it looks like a battle for third place. The Area 51 comedy with Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Kristen Wiig and the voice of Seth Rogen looks like a debut around $13 million. However, Paul is rated R and Simon Pegg hasn't had great success in the US with his live-action comedies (In 2008, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People opened with $1.4 million and Run, Fat Boy, Run with $2.3 million). Limitless with Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro and Abbie Cornish has similar box office expectations. The mind-empowering pill thriller has the advantage of the only new release with a PG-13 rating. Rounding out the slate is The Lincoln Lawyer with Matthew McConaughey and Marisa Tomei.

Last weekend, Battle: Los Angeles opened in theaters with $35.6 million, a decent March performance that was in line with expectations. Deadline reported that Sony claimed the production budget was a modest $70 million. If that's the case, the sci-fi invasion title looks on course for a profitable run. In second place, Rango dropped 41% and grossed $22.6 million, which brought its total up to $68 million. In third place, the re-telling of Red Riding Hood took in $14.0 million.

Surprisingly, the biggest new generator was the fifth place movie, Disney's Mars Needs Moms. With only $6.9 million, the motion-capture project appears headed for box office infamy. Why? The production costs were around $150 million with another $50 million in marketing. Worldwide box office won't help much either. The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Mars Need Moms rung up $2.1 million in 14 countries.... Read More
