Movies Released on May 6, 2011

This Year In Movies - Jumping the Broom, Something Borrowed, Thor open in wide release this weekend. Marvel Studios has the honor of opening the summer movie season with the hammer-wielding god. Last year, fellow Marvel movie Iron Man 2 opened with $128 million and in 2009, Wolverine debuted with $85 million. Moviegoers clearly have an appetite for big comic-book movies, but it's unlikely this year will rise to the same level. Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, looks to debut around $70 million according to trading on Hollywood Stock Exchange. In counter programming positions, Jumping the Broom, a wedding comedy and Something Borrowed, a romantic comedy also arrive in theaters. In past years, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Made of Honor exploited this strategy for box office takes around $15 million. However, with both wide releases vying for same angle this year, tracking for both is closer to $10 million.

Last weekend, Fast Five blew past expectations with a record-breaking $86.2 million weekend. That was over 20% more than 2009's Fast and Furious, the previous record holder for the top April open. If Thor doesn't surprise on the upside, Fast Five could hold the 2011 weekend record well into May. In second place, Rio sold close to $15 million in tickets and that brought its total over $100 million. However, if Fast wasn't in the movie title, there wasn't a lot of good news left. Disney's Prom opened in 5th place with under $5 million and Weinstein's Hoodwinked sequel came in 6th with a bit over $4 million. Far out of the top 10, Dylan Dog was able only to ring up $750,000 in ticket sales.... Read More
