Scrappy undersized defensive back Freddie Steinmark is a standout player on the national-title-winning 1969 University of Texas football team, before his gridiron career is tragically cut short when he goes to the hospital for a bone bruise and learns that he has a cancerous tumor that takes his leg and ends his career.

Follows the Cooper clan as four generations of extended family come together for their annual Christmas Eve celebration. As the evening unfolds, a series of unexpected visitors and unlikely events turn the night upside down, leading them all toward a surprising rediscovery of family bonds and the spirit of the holiday.
