A supernatural love story that centers on a teenage girl, Tessa (Joey King), who, after bouncing around in foster homes for most of her childhood, doesn’t believe she deserves her own love story. Everything changes after she has a chance encounter with Skylar (Kyle Allen), a senior from a neighboring town who’s a true romantic. As her heart begins to open, tragedy strikes when a car accident takes Skylar’s life, while Tessa survives. As Tessa searches for answers in the aftermath of the accident, she soon believes Skylar is attempting to reconnect with her from the afterworld. With the help of her best friend and a newfound belief that love never dies, Tessa attempts to contact Skylar one last time, in order to give their love story the epic ending it deserves.

The film tells the story of Butter (Alex Kersting), a smart, funny high school junior who happens to be obese. Butter manages to befriend the prettiest girl at school, Anna (McKaley Miller), via social media by pretending to be a jock from another school. Butter fears he can never tell Anna, his secret crush, who he really is - sure she would never accept him and his obesity. Meanwhile, Butter struggles with self- esteem and family issues, as his mother (Sorvino) feels the only way she can show her love is by feeding him. Facing constant bullying at school, Butter finally devises a crazy plan: he announces he is going to eat himself to death, on New Year’s Eve, live on the Internet – with the whole school invited to watch. Butter expects pity, insults, and sheer indifference. Instead he gets cheerleaders rallying around his deadly plan, and his social media fame makes him a sudden member of the school’s in crowd. As Butter’s popularity grows, so does his new friendship with Anna. But as New Year’s approaches can he live with the fallout if he doesn't go through with his plans?

After suffering a near-death experience as a young girl, Darby Harper (Downs) gains the ability to see dead people. As a result, she becomes introverted and shut off from her high school peers and prefers to spend time counseling lonely spirits who have unfinished business on earth. But all that changes when Capri (Cravalho), the Queen Bee of the school’s most exclusive clique, unexpectedly dies in a freak hair straightening accident, resulting in the obvious cancellation of her upcoming “Sweet 17.” Capri, however, pleads with Darby from the other side to intervene and convince Capri’s friends to proceed with the party as planned. In order to appease the wrath of the undead diva, Darby must emerge from her self-imposed exile and reinvent herself — which along the way allows her to find new joy back in the land of the living.
