A civil war re-enacter, someone who is obsessive about historical precision, and three other guys (two fellow re-enacters and an African-American professor of history who is protesting the event) are accidentally transported back in time and awaken in the actual civil war. Once there, they have to find there way home without altering history or permanently breaking America in half.

During the Civil War, Union Army surgeon Dr. Mary Edwards Walker struggles to be accepted and compensated in the same manner as her male counterparts in the medical field and ultimately becomes the first and only female recipient to receive the Congressional Medal Of Honor. Even after receiving her medical degree at Syracuse Medical College, Walker is considered unfit for the Union Army Examining Board and initially is only allowed to serve voluntarily as a surgeon. While serving in the war, Dr. Walker is captured by Confederate soldiers after boldly crossing enemy lines to treat wounded civilians and is arrested as a spy – eventually being released in a prisoner exchange.

Bowe Bergdahl, an Army sergeant, is captured by the Taliban and held prisoner for five years after he leaves his base in Afghanistan.

Hunter Scott, a young boy, causes a stir when the research he does for a school history project causes a re-examination of the case of U.S.S. Indianapolis Capt. Charles McVeigh, who had been court-martialed and blamed for the WWII sinking of the ship and the loss of the sailors.

Photojournalist Robert Capa memorialized many conflicts, including the Spanish Civil War and World War II. He was one of the few photographers to land on the beach in Normandy.
