Atrus is the grandson of a woman who discovered the D'ni civilization in a cavern deep below the New Mexico desert. These mystical people create books that link to other worlds, but the discovery triggers a cultural clash.

Set in 2033, after a nuclear holocaust devastates Moscow and survivors head under ground, a young survivor is forced to go on a journey that will see him deal with mutants, soldiers of a Fourth Reich and political factions of various metro stations in order to reach above ground.
