The film turns on Lupe (Covarrubias), a Mexican-Navajo mechanic who teams up with an outlaw cowgirl (Hethcoat) to help save her dying mother. En route, they cross a desert, outpace criminals, and run into into a corrupt landowner.

Follows a cowardly sheep farmer (Seth MacFarlane) who chickens out of a gunfight and sees his girlfriend (Amanda Seyfried) leave him for another man. When a mysterious woman (Charlize Theron) rides into town, she helps him find his courage. But when her outlaw husband arrives seeking revenge, the farmer must put his newfound courage to the test. You see, he's heard that in the nearby town, there's a bandit afoot (Randy Quaid), with a $1,000 bounty on his head.
