A Mighty Wind

Formed in the 1960's, the Folksmen (Guest, McKean, Shearer) were a key group in the "Great Folk Music Scare", meeting as freshmen at Ohio Wesleyan College, and touring for 26 months as a folk trio, singing a unique type of "eclectified folk" music. It wasn't meant to last, however, and the three musicians went their separate ways. Now, thirty years later, they've reunited for a comeback tour of sorts, as long as the folk festivals they're playing at are within a day's travel of their homes, all of which leads up to a climactic memorial concert at Carnegie Hall following the death of a legendary folk music promoter, where they reunite with two other folk groups. In the tradition of This is Spinal Tap (an aging heavy metal band), Waiting for Guffman (a small town theater group), and Best in Show (the Westminster Dog Show), this is a mocking look at the world of folk music.

With every word Jack speaks, a leaf falls from the tree and he realizes that when the last leaf falls, both he and the tree are toast. Words have never failed Jack McCall, but now he’s got to stop talking and conjure up some outrageous ways to communicate or he’s a goner.

The motley crew of retirees instantly recognize the potential for drama with this love triangle. A wily old man goads the boys to battle for Joyce. It’s there that a poet says a few things that cause David’s head to tilt and move him a little further down the path of finding himself. The problem is the ungentlemanly competition he’s still in with William. When that turns extreme, David makes a decision that nearly ruins his dual-level progress with Joyce. A Prairie Home Companion

The movie is a celebrity version of Garrison Keillor's radio show. It adds a slight story of the radio show ending as a new owner (Tommy Lee Jones) has bought the Fitzgerald theater that the show broadcasts from and is going to tear it down. Another fantasy element is thrown in as an angel (Virginia Madsen) stalks the theater to take one of the performers. Keillor plays the lead character, coincidentally called GK. Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep play the singing Johnson Sisters, with Lindsay Lohan as a suicide-obsessed daughter of Streep. Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly are hilarious as the slightly off-color singing cowboy duo, Dusty & Lefty. Kevin Kline is a security guard who tells the story. Maya Rudolph also appears as a pregnant stage coordinator. Contains some mild sexually-oriented jokes.
