Movies Released on August 5, 2011
The Planet of the Apes franchise reboot is said to be having a difficult gaining interest with mainstream audiences; however, the film is the frontrunner for the top box office spot (with $35-45 million expected). The body-switching male comedy, The Change Up, has garnered significant intrigue from women of all ages (given their proclaimed love for Ryan Reynolds). The raunchy film has some funny moments; however, overall doesn’t truly compare to the laughs in Horrible Bosses, Bridesmaids (which hits DVD/Blu-ray next month) or to the producers’ previous "masterpiece", Wedding Crashers. Look for an opening weekend total around $15-20 million.
Last weekend, Cowboys & Aliens managed to rope in a box office win after a tight fight with The Smurfs. The Jon Favreau-directed sci-fi western netted a mere $800,000 over The Smurfs, according to today’s official tallied results ($36.4 million vs. $35.6 million). Per the Los Angeles Times, "Unless word of mouth proves much stronger than exit polls indicated this weekend, [Cowboys & Aliens] doesn’t end up with much more than $100 million at the domestic box office."
