Movies Released March 23, 2012

This Year in Movies - The Hunger Games opens in wide release this weekend and the box office expectations are incredibly high. Entertainment Weekly reports that The Hunger Games has sold more advanced tickets through Fandango than any non-sequel, essentially beating everything except the Twilight and Harry Potter sequels. Given the strong pre-release interest, a debut over $100 million appears a forgone conclusion. The record for highest non-sequel first weekend is Alice in Wonderland, which opened March 5, 2010 with $116 million. That's good news for Lionsgate, which has already planned for a 4-part franchise with Jennifer Lawrence.
