Movies Released October 29, 2010

This Year in Movies - Saw 3D opens in wide release this weekend. This marks the seventh year that a Saw movie will open near Halloween and if the trailers are to be believed, it will also mark the last time. If it really is the final Saw, it was quite a run. The previous six Saw movies grossed a cumulative $730 million worldwide. Assuming that 3D gives the franchise an extra boost, the Jigsaw experiments will end with over $400 million domestically and $800 million worldwide. Regardless of the reviews, it's an impressive acheivement that started with a cheap horror movie budgeted at a little over $1 million.

Speaking of low budget horror movies, Paranormal Activity 2 seems ready to take over the October box office leadership for Saw. Last weekend, the sequel cashed in with over $40 million in ticket sales including over $6 million in Friday midnight showings. Needless to say, that was far above most predictions. Jackass 3D dropped a bit more sharply than its previous two tries while Red dropped just 30% from last weekend.
