Superheroes and sequels had a major and on-going presence on the big screen in 2012. The Marvel superhero team, The Avengers, introduced themselves to audiences worldwide in early May and ruled the global box office with $1.5 billion. Christian Bale reprised his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, the third installment in the renewed DC Comics franchise and took in over $1 billion at the box office. Only a decade after shattering opening weekend box office records, Sony rebooted the Spider-Man franchise with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and grossed more than $752M.
Audiences across the world loved the 23rd James Bond adventure, Skyfall ($980 million), making it one of the most popular (and successful) Bond films ever. The box office of take of the Middle Earth adventure The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is still growing and will likely end up in at least the $800M range.
The second and final part of The Twilight Saga’s Breaking Dawn, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, unspooled in November ($800M). Meanwhile, animated sequels DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3 ($742M) and Ice Age: Continental Drift ($875M), a fourth installment of the Ice Age franchise, helped satisfy family audiences again. Pixar Animation’s Brave ($535M) helped too.
The film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' best-selling novel, The Hunger Games, made nearly $690M in worldwide grosses (with the sequel coming out in 2013). Male audiences drove big success for Seth MacFarlane’s first big screen movie, Ted, which generated more than $500M at the box office (and even landed him the gig of hosting the Oscars).
