Sarah Huttinger's (Jennifer Aniston) life is in a tailspin. She's finally agreed to marry her boyfriend Jeff (Mark Ruffalo), but isn't at all sure that marriage is what she really wants…in fact, she's not sure what she wants in general.

As conflicted as she is about her love life, her professional life isn't much better – an aspiring journalist, Sarah's career has stalled at the "New York Times" obituary column. Charles Schine is a New York businessman who meets a sexy woman on a train and ends up in a seedy hotel room with her. While there, he's beaten and she is raped by a man who also robs them. The robber then begins to blackmail Schine so that his wife and family don't find out about his infidelity with the woman. This drives Schine from his humdrum life into a world of fraud, betrayal, and murder.
