A space war is taking place on the planet named Hyperion, where there are electricity-spewing trees and Time Tombs, large artifacts that can move through time. The tombs are guarded by a monster called the Shrike, which impales people on metal trees.

Bink, a young man without magical powers lives on the planet Xanth, where everyone has some sort of powers. Bink will be exiled unless he can manifest his own magical skills.
