Based on an article in Wired magazine, the movie centers around the true story of a $100 million diamond heist in Antwerp.

A contractor's artist wife suffers from an illness that prevents her from being in the sunlight and, as such, he builds a futuristic house that blocks out any natural light. When a band of criminals attempts to break into the house to steal one of his wife's valuable sculptures, he must evade and outsmart them to protect his home.

Built around Philippe Petit's real-life "artistic crime of the century" -- when the Frenchman illegally walked a tightrope strung between the World Trade Center towers in August 1974 -- "Spin" follows an ensemble cast of characters struggling throughout New York. The characters include a young Irish monk living among prostitutes in the Bronx; a group of mothers mourning their sons, killed in Vietnam, in a Park Avenue apartment; and a 38-year-old grandmother walking the streets with her teenage daughter.

The story focuses on the lives of two men who turned the 1893 Chicago World's Fair into their playground. One man, Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, in a short period of time was forced to overcome immense obstacles to construct the famous "White City" around which the fair was built. The other, H.H. Holmes, was a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair. Holmes devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims to their death.

Five young monks in 17th-century China, each who specialize in a different style of "animal" kung fu, are forced to flee their secret temple and rely on their training and instincts to survive.
