A young waitress from the streets of Brooklyn and an aspiring musician from a wealthy family fall in love and must confront their life choices.

A fierce musical contest has arisen in the wake of a great galactic war known as the Metagalactic Grand Prix. Part gladiatorial contest, part beauty pageant, part concert extravaganza, and part continuation of the wars of the past, species far and wide compete in feats of song, and dance.

Behind closed doors in their Hollywood Hills mansion, the Family convene and meditate under the guidance of their “spiritual father,” Yod. He initiates his “sons and daughters” into a variety of extreme practices, which cause controversy with local authorities. The Family flees to Hawaii, eventually leading to their dramatic demise.

The singer battled substance abuse and a decline in artistic fortunes that ended only when she dueted with the Pet Shop Boys for 1990's "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" She died in 1999 at age 59 after a long battle with cancer.

Kit Lambert discovers the rock band The Who while he is trying to make a film about the band, known then as the High Numbers. Instead, he decides to manage the band and to launch their musical career, and with Chris Stamp -- brother of Terence Stamp -- Lambert pushes Townshend to take The Who into more experimental avenues. The result is the seminal rock opera album "Tommy," which later becomes a Ken Russell film. Lambert also works with Jimi Hendrix and other artists, and is as known for self-destruction as they are.
