A couple moves into an old house inhabited by the man's half-brother, who escaped hellish torture from the Cenobites but returned shorn of his skin. The Cenobites, are triggered by a Rubik's Cube-like puzzle device that unlocks the gates of hell and would like another meeting with the man.

A good boy named Milton Fauster, who shoplifts with sister, dies in a freak accident and ends up in an unearthly reform school called Heck, where Lizzie Borden teaches home economics and Richard Nixon is the ethics teacher. Milton meets Virgil, a boy who has a map of the Nine Circles of Heck, and the two plot to escape the netherworld
