Given just a few months to live, Tessa compiles a list of "things to do before I die." Released from the constraints of normal conventions, Tessa seeks out new experiences to make her feel as alive as possible before she dies. It's 1964, the Rolling Stones appear on television and three best friends from the suburbs of New Jersey decide to form a rock band.

Martine, a 23-year-old artist from New York, arrives in Los Angeles to stay in the pool house of a family living in the hip and hilly community of Silver Lake. Peter, the father, has agreed to help Martine complete sound design on her art film as a favor to his wife. Martine innocently enters the seemingly idyllic life of this open-minded family with two kids and a relaxed Southern California vibe. Like a bolt of lightning, her arrival sparks a surge of energy that awakens suppressed impulses in everyone and forces them to confront their own fears and desires.

The story centers on the loves and losses of a sensitive college boy in the 1960s who is more interested in American literature than in the era's political upheavals.

Pim, an introverted child, occupies his time drawing and fantasizing while keeping his emerging desires a secret. As a teenager, he grows infatuated with Gino, the handsome boy next door. When a hunky young man from the local fair starts living with Pim and his mother, he seizes the opportunity to leave home and move in with Gino's family. His plan backfires as Gino departs, romancing and living with a girl from across the border. It seems like Pim's dreams will never come true, but then one rainy day Gino returns home...
