A housekeeper's literal interpretations of the instructions left by her employers always leads to trouble.

The story revolves around a mute teenager who lives on a farm in Wisconsin with a family that’s raised a coveted breed of dog for generations. Edgar Sawtelle’s father dies mysteriously after his uncle comes to stay with the family, which sends the youth fleeing into the woods with three of his dogs.

The story centers on three small-town guys, one who joins the army, another who moves to the city and gets addicted to drugs, and a third who stays home and gets his girlfriend pregnant, all set to the songs of punk band Green Day.

Two days in October 1967 two events were taking place, one was at the University of Wisconsin where students were protesting Dow Chemical for its production of napalm when their peaceful demonstration turned into a riot. The other event was in Vietnam, where a platoon of U.S. soldiers were ambushed by Viet Cong and 61 Americans were killed. These two separate events solidified opposition to the war on college campuses.

A headstrong woman drags her family on a rickety wagon from Boone's Lick, Mo., to the Wyoming fort where her husband lives. Her brother in law escorts them on this dangerous journey and along the way falls in love with her.
