Patrice Émery Lumumba, a Congolese independence leader, becomes the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo, after he helps win its independence from Belgium in June 1960. Only twelve weeks later, Lumumba's government is deposed in a coup during the Congo Crisis.

Set in the near future, Marjorie Prime centers on Marjorie (Lois Smith), who spends time with the young likeness of her deceased husband Walter (Jon Hamm). This revitalized Walter is a sophisticated holographic projection that provides companionship while stimulating Marjorie’s memory—allowing her to explore their shared past as she lives with dementia.

Siblings discover the wreckage of a single-engine plane crash years after the accident has occurred. Three sets of siblings each interacts with the downed aircraft over time, from the crash to the discovery to an artist's installation based on the event.
