Growing up impoverished in small-town Texas, young Rickey Hill shows an extraordinary ability for hitting a baseball, despite being burdened by leg braces from a degenerative spinal disease. His stern, pastor father (DENNIS QUAID) discourages Rickey from playing baseball to protect him from injury, and to have him follow in his footsteps and become a preacher. As a young man, Rickey (COLIN FORD) becomes a baseball phenomenon. His desire to participate in a try-out for a legendary major league scout divides the family and threatens Rickey’s dream of playing professional baseball.

The story, which is set in the 1930s, centers around the University of Washington's powerhouse rowing team.

The Von Erichs, real name Adkisson, begin their wrestling dynasty when Fritz Von Erich (born Jack Barton Adkisson) becomes a star in the National Wrestling Alliance, holding multiple belts in the 1960s before becoming president of the org. He dies in 1997. Him and his wife Doris have six sons, five of whom die before their father, which leads to talk of a curse, colloquially dubbed the "Von Erich curse". Today, two sons of Kevin Von Erich, the last surviving brother, are both pro wrestlers with Major League Wrestling. In 2009, the Von Erich family are inducted by Michael "P.S." Hayes into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Mike Veeck grew up in the shadow of his hustler father, Hall of Fame baseball owner Bill Veeck. The Veeck name became both legendary and notorious in professional baseball as they introduced the fun at ballparks — giveaways, theme nights, fireworks, and more. But it all came to a screeching halt when Mike blew up his father's career. Exiled from the game he loved, the younger Veeck spent the next few decades clawing his way up from rock bottom, determined to redeem himself. After receiving distressing news, what started as a journey to reclaim the family legacy, became an opportunity to appreciate that family more fully.
