Their ordeal culminates in a daring escape hanging onto the skids of a Kiowa helicopter. Hegar also sues the secretary of defense asserting that the Combat Exclusion Policy (which prevents women from entering direct combat) is unconstitutional, and she wins. In 2013, the secretary of defense repeals the policy.
