The plot centers on a single mother and her young daughter struggling to make ends meet until they inherit a farmhouse from their grandfather. When a family business rival (Spade) sends armed men to take the water rights to the farm’s creek by force, the situation spirals out of control.
The film follows the efforts of Kenneth Feinberg, a powerful Washington lawyer put in charge of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (also known as the 9/11 Fund), who, in almost three years of pro bono work on the case, fights off the cynicism, bureaucracy and politics associated with administering government funds. In doing so, he discovers what life is worth.
Centers on a convicted felon Beth (Nicholson), who forms an unlikely alliance with a young public defense lawyer Jess (Roberts), who does everything she can to get Beth’s young son back from her sister after Beth went into prison 10 years earlier for manslaughter. Beth finally lowers her guard enough to meet a former U.S. soldier (Quinto) unfazed by her checkered past.
