While collecting junk one day, best friends Sonny and Sam meet Slappy, a mischievous talking dummy from an unpublished "Goosebumps" book by R.L. Stine. Hoping to start his own family, Slappy kidnaps Sonny's mother and brings all of his ghoulish friends back to life -- just in time for Halloween. As the sleepy town becomes overrun with monsters, witches and other mysterious creatures, Sonny joins forces with his sister, Sam and a kindly neighbor to save Sonny's mom and foil Slappy's plan.

After moving into a small town, Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) meets Hannah (Odeya Rush), his neighbor. Hannah's father R. L. Stine (Jack Black), who writes the Goosebumps stories, keeps all the monsters in the series locked up in his books. When Zach unintentionally releases the monsters from the books, the three team up in order to put the monsters back where they came from.

Set in the 1960s, working-class couple James & Florida Evans raise three kids while struggling with hard financial times, unemployment and keeping their kids away from temptations that come with living in a Chicago housing project.
