Miramax Films announced the acquisition of the worldwide theatrical, home-video and television distribution rights outside of Asia to the next Pokemon sequel "Pokemon 4: The Movie -- Celebi: A Timeless Encounter," the fourth animated feature film based on the characters from the top-rated "Pokemon" children's TV show and video game which have become a worldwide cultural and retail phenomenon. The announcement was made today by Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein.
Miramax also acquired the option to distribute the fifth picture in the series, which is currently in production at Japan's Shogakukan Productions. "Pokemon 4" will be released in North American theaters Thanksgiving 2002, and will then be distributed throughout the world.
The film opened in Japan last July, and has grossed $32 million to date, making it one of Japan's top ten grossing films of 2001. This fourth installment stars the newest Pokemon character, the winged green Celebi, whose time-traveling skills bring new adventures to Ash, Pikachu, and their friends.
"Releasing 'Pokemon 4' is an extremely exciting project for all of us at Miramax," said Harvey Weinstein. "We are delighted to be working with everyone at Shogakukan and Pokemon USA and look forward to introducing new Pokemon characters, including Celebi, to fans around the world.
