Set in Eerie-on-Sea, a seaside town filled with oddball characters and mysteries as murky as its winter fog, a young boy named Herbert Lemon acts as a hotel's lost-and-found director. He teams up with Violet Parma, a young girl who is looking for parents she lost as a baby. They set off on an adventure that involves the Malamander — a part-fish, part-human monster whose egg is said to make dreams come true — and a hook-handed man who is pursuing them.

Herbert Lemon, Lost-and-Founder at the Grand Nautilus Hotel, knows that returning lost things to their rightful owners is not easy – especially when the lost thing is not a thing at all but a girl. No one knows what happened to Violet Parma's parents 12 years ago, and when she engages Herbie to help her find them, the pair discover that their disappearance might have something to do with legendary sea-monster, the Malamander.
