Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Larry Crowne, and Monte Carlo open in wide release this weekend. The third Transformers gets an early start on the Fourth of July weekend with previews on Tuesday night. Exhibitors and studios are hopeful that Michael Bay will reinvigorate faltering 3D box office attendance. After the spectacular results of Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, the relative percentage of ticket revenue from 3D versus 2D had steadily declined despite more digital projectors capable the extra dimension. The first Transformers opened in 2007 with $71 million and the sequel arrived two years later with $109 million. Despite poor reviews (20% on Rotten Tomatoes), Revenge of the Fallen still was able to pass $400 million in North American box office. With the early start and holiday weekend, Dark of the Moon could see a total above $140 million by Monday night, although its three day gross will probably fall short of Revenge of the Fallen.
Also opening, Larry Crowne, with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, and Monte Carlo with Selena Gomez. Both will open on Friday and both will be overshadowed by the giant robots arriving in cinemas on Tuesday night. Traders on the Hollywood Stock Exchange expect around $20 million for Larry Crowne and high single digits for Monte Carlo through the 4-day weekend.
