In 1950s in Lakewood, California, bean fields are drawn up, sectioned off and divided up--leaving tracts for small houses of similar design. Homes are quickly sold to young couples -- many of the men are WWII veterans -- purchasing a house for the first time. A shopping mall is opened in 1952 and includes a half-mile civil defense fallout shelter due to the fear of Soviet attack.
