Movies Released November 19, 2010

This Year in Movies - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I and The Next Three Days open in wide release this weekend. There is no doubt which movie will open number one. The seventh Harry Potter is aiming for at least $100 million and several box office tracking services are predicting over $130 million. That type of business would be a dramatic increase from previous Potter opens. The Half Blood Prince arrived in theaters on July 15, 2009, which was a Wednesday, and took in nearly $78 million over the 3-day weekend. The Order of the Phoenix had a similar release date in 2007 and grossed around $77 million. The last time a Harry Potter film debuted in the fall was 2005 with The Goblet of Fire, which opened with $102 million (close to $120 million in 2010 ticket prices).

Not to be forgotten, The Next Three Days also arrives in theaters on Friday. Other studios have typically avoided debuting their movies on the same the release date of any Harry Potter sequel. The most successful counter-programming was in 2005 with Walk the Line which sold $22.3 million in tickets. Despite its solid cast, The Next Three Days will be fortunate to break $10 million.

Last weekend, Megamind became a back-to-back champion with a $29.1 million weekend, bringing its total to $88.8 million. Unstoppable took in $22.7 million and a strong critical reception (85% on Rotten Tomatoes) while Skyline under performed with $11.7 million and lousy reviews (13%). Morning Glory came in with $9.2 million for the weekend and $11.8 million including its Wednesday head start.... Read More
