Phoebe Siegler, a sarcastic and garrulous woman heads to California to try to find her best friend's missing teenage daughter. When a lead brings her to the stark and seedy desert towns just east of Los Angeles, Phoebe is put in contact with Charles Heist, a laconic, strange private eye with an uncanny ability to find those that don't want to be found, who reluctantly agrees to help. She dubs him The Feral Detective. As the unlikely pair traverse the stunning desert and its enclaves and get closer to the missing girl, their lives are placed in increasing jeopardy.

Set in the small town of Coldwater, MI, the phones start ringing and voices say they are calling from heaven. While each call is greeted differently — some with love, some with religious zeal, some with fear — a grieving single father with an inquisitive and hopeful son takes it upon himself to uncover whether these callers are hoaxers, or they are really dialing long distance.

Nick Zappetti, an Italian-American from East Harlem, is was part of the U.S. occupation forces sent to Japan after World War II. Believing that Tokyo offers certain opportunities, Zappetti has a failed stint as a wrestler, participates in a fumbled diamond heist and is deported. But he returns illegally and opens a pizza joint, which in the mid-'60s becomes the center of Tokyo's nightlife, and for the next 15 years, he becomes an integral part in the yakuza's rise to power.
