The film tells the true story of Capt. Ernest Evans, the U.S. Naval Commander posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle off Samar, part of the October 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf - one of the largest naval engagement in history.

The other event was in Vietnam, where a platoon of U.S. soldiers were ambushed by Viet Cong and 61 Americans were killed. These two separate events solidified opposition to the war on college campuses.

Based on a book written by a former marine, this film follows the U.S. assault on the Iraqi city of Fallujah, which was led by Gen. Jim Mattis (Harrison Ford) and resulted in dozens of American casualties. The high number of U.S. deaths is partially attributed to White House orders to withdraw just before the city was captured.
