They are taken in by a girl named Thorn and her grandmother, and find out that the valley is threatened by an evil force called the Lord of the Locusts.

A boy named Finley helps out another boy -- who will will only answer to the name Boy 21 (the number of his basketball jersey).

Set in a civil war-torn future New York City, a clairvoyant man is handed a baby and sees two visions of the future: one where the child becomes a fascist dictator, and one where it brings peace on Earth.
