American Wolf

O-Six, in some circles, is the world's most famous wild animal. The female alpha wolf, which is named after the year she was born, is collared and tracked by researchers at Yellowstone National Park, gaining a huge following from not only scientists but the public as well. She is shot by a hunter in 2012 just outside the park's boundaries, an act that causes howls around the country (she even got an obituary in The New York Times) despite it being legal — wolves are scaled back from endangered species' lists, so there are new population control measures in place.

Amulet

The story centers on a brother and sister who move into their late great-grandfather's home after their father dies. They must use his amulet to rescue their widowed mother from a beast who lures her into an underground world.

Angelology

Follows a young nun in upstate New York who, in uncovering a correspondence between the former mother superior and Abigail Rockefeller, unwittingly reignites an ancient war between a society of angelologists (a group that studies angels) and the Nephilim (the monster-like descendants of angels and humans). The book pulls from a variety of religious and mythical histories and, per Simonoff, "blends biblical lore, the Orpheus myth, the apocryphal Book of Enoch and the fall of the rebel angels, with bravura storytelling.
