William Dodd, the United States' reluctant and mild-mannered ambassador to Berlin in 1933, and his daughter Martha, a vivacious socialite have romantic affairs with a Gestapo official and a Soviet spy. Dodd and his family at first naively navigate life in Nazi Germany but they slowly gain awareness of the mounting brutality around them.

Fourteen-year-old Homer Macauley is determined to be the best and fastest bicycle telegraph messenger anyone has ever seen. His older brother has gone to war, leaving Homer to look after his widowed mother, his older sister and his 4-year-old brother, Ulysses. And so it is that as spring turns to summer, 1942, Homer Macauley delivers messages of love, hope, pain... and death... to the good people of Ithaca.

A low-level bureaucrat discovers that after 30 years in the same job, he's contracted stomach cancer. Determined to seek more from the remaining moments of his life, he seeks out decadent pursuits before deciding he wants to leave behind something memorable.
