A young Queen Amanirenas rules over the Kush Kingdom of Nubia, one of the richest kingdom's in Ancient Africa. She successfully leads her army of Nubians into battle against the mighty invading Roman Empire forcing them to withdraw and negotiate peace.

The woman, Barbara Zimmerman, becomes a publishing legend at Doubleday and is the founder of the New York Review of Books.

A strategic series of Civil War battles take place in the Shenandoah Valley between Union General George Armstrong Custer and Confederate Colonel John Singleton Mosby, known as the Gray Ghost for his stealth and elusiveness.
