Horn's son is the victim of medical malpractice and as the result of a subsequent lawsuit, has a trust worth nearly $2 million, which his father stands to inherit in the wake of his death. Detectives discovers that Perry used how-to book "Hit Man: A Technical Manual for Independent Contractors" as a guide to execute the murders. The families of the victims go on to file a class-action lawsuit against the Colorado-based publisher Paladin Press. The attorneys representing the families then hire Rodney Smolla, a First Amendment attorney and professor at William & Mary Law School, to consult on the historic case, which takes five years to settle amidst a series of shocking and bizarre developments.

Deric Lostutter, a member of the hacker group Anonymous, helps expose a cover-up of the rape of a 16-year-old girl by two high school football players in Steubenville, Ohio. After releasing a video made by the football players, showing them with the rape victim, Lostutter's home is raided by the FBI and he is charged for obtaining tweets and social media posts that contain details about the rape and for threatening action against the rapists. He could spend more than a decade in prison -- while the rapists he helped catch spent only one year in jail.

Arminius, a German, is trained as a Roman warrior, but switches allegiance when the Romans try to take over Germania. At 25, he unites disparate Germanic tribes and rallies them to victory against the Roman Army in the bloody Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
