Movies Released January 28, 2011

This Year in Movies - The Mechanic, and The Rite open in wide release this weekend. The Mikael Hafstrom directed exorcism tale with Anthony Hopkins aims to open in the mid-teens (based on Hollywood Stock Exchange pricing). That would likely give The Rite the top spot at the box office. The Mechanic with Jason Statham and Ben Foster will just try to break double digits, but even that could be enough for second place.

Last weekend, No Strings Attached took first place with over $20 million, beating out The Green Hornet which sold around $18 million in tickets. The top 10 box office was filled with Best Picture nominees including The King's Speech at 4th with nearly $60 million total, True Grit in 5th with almost $140 million, Black Swan with $84 million in 6th and The Fighter with $73 million in total box office.

This morning, The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 83rd Oscars. The King's Speech lead the pack with 12 nominations followed by True Grit with 10 and Inception and The Social Network each with 8.

On Monday morning, there was another set of nominations, but unlike the Oscars, it's unlikely any of the receipients will be honored by the awards. The Golden Rasberry Foundation released their 31st Razzie Award nominations. The Last Airbender led the way with 9 nominations. The Razzies introduced a new category, Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D and nominated Revenge of Kitty Galore, Clash of the Titans, The Last Airbender, Nutcracker 3D and Saw 3D.... Read More
