Movies Released May 27, 2011

This Year in Movies - Kung Fu Panda 2, and The Hangover Part II open in wide release this weekend. It's Memorial Day weekend in the US and that means the summer blockbuster season will be fully operational. With the holiday on Monday and the new releases arriving on Thursday, we're finally going to see a $100 million gross albeit over a long weekend. Directed by Todd Phillips, the sequel to the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all-time is set for a holiday open around $120 million. With the first Hangover, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Bradley Cooper hit cinemas in June 2009 with $45 million. That was a strong debut, but the really impressive performance came in the weeks after as the movie bucked the usual trend of massive drop-offs. Instead, the bachelor-party comedy fell just 27% its second weekend, 18% its third weekend and would never drop by more than 45% week-over-week. While The Hangover 2 has the over 17 audience occupied, another sequel will aim for the family audience. Jack Black's voice returns and a host of stars join the 3D animated franchise. Kung Fu Panda 2 looks ready for an open in the $80 million range.

Last weekend, Pirates arrived with $90 million, in line with the low-end of expectations. However, the Walt Disney picture opened with the biggest international gross of all-time. The strong worldwide sales should be enough for Disney to greenlight more Pirate sequels, although Johnny Depp told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted to hold off for a bit on Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Much like The Hangover's 2009 performance, Bridesmaids had a great second weekend by dropping just 20% in second place with $21 million. On the other hand, Priest dropped nearly 70% to under $5 million in fifth place. In only 6 theaters, Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris took in $100,000 per location, a very strong performance even in limited release.... Read More
