Movies Released May 13, 2011

This Year in Movies - Bridesmaids, and Priest open in wide release this weekend. The second weekend in May is typically the slowest and that appears to be the case this year. Given the holdovers, the new movies will be fighting for second place at best. The Judd Apatow produced, Paul Feig directed wedding comedy with Kristen Wiig and Rose Byrne has a slight edge in predicted box office. Traders on the Hollywood Stock Exchange have Bridesmaids grossing around $20 million while other tracking services are below that. Wiig was last in Paul, which took in $13 million its first week. The manga-based Priest, directed by Scott Stewart and starring Paul Bettany and Maggie Q looks to debut in the $18 million range. Stewart previously direct Bettany in 2010's Legion, which opened close to $18 million.

Last weekend, Thor arrived in cinemas with nearly $66 million, right in line with expectations. Even with a significant drop off in business, Chris Hemsworth should be able to hang on to the number one spot. Last year, Iron Man 2 dropped close to 60%, but off from an open of $128 million. A similar performance for Thor would yield mid to high $20s. Fast Five continued its strong run by pulling in an additional $32 million and close in on $140 million in ten days. In third place, Jumping the Broom exceeded expectations with over $15 million. Despite poor reviews (15% on Rotten Tomatoes), Something Borrowed managed to gross nearly $14 million.... Read More
