Based on a true story, the film tells of a personal-injury lawyer from Mississippi who took on the case of Jeremiah O'Keefe, an owner of a local chain of funeral homes. O'Keefe claimed that he had been cheated by a major funeral parlor conglomerate. With the cooperation of O'Keefe's lawyer, who was an admitted racist, he won $260 million for O'Keefe.

Years ago, unable to deal with the tragic death of their newborn baby, Mark left the woman he loved and the island he grew up on. Now, seven years later, Mark has carved out a career in the LAPD, taking down drug traffickers with his wise-cracking partner, Phil. Upon receiving news from his mother that a tragic death has once again occurred on the island, Mark returns home. Back on the island, Mark consoles his mother as they bury his younger brother. Jurnee Smollett plays the central character in the film. Her character is caught between Lance Gross and Robbie Jones. Smollett’s Judith is an Ivy League educated relationship expert who gives marital advice for a living, yet can't seem to follow that advice in her own marriage to Bryce (Gross). Bored with her life, she breaks her professional code and begins an affair with a smooth talking client (Jones).
